Compostable Packaging

Compostable Packaging

We now offer some of our products in a compostable bag!

When your bag is empty you can place it in your city or home compost pile and it will fully decompose.

The bags are certified compostable and do not contain BPAs, PFAs, GMOs or animal products. They are made of FSC certified wood cellulose derived bioplastic.

It’s important to note that compostable plastic is different from biodegradable plastic. Biodegradable can refer to any material that degrades in the environment over time, while compostable products are only organic elements that fully degrade in the environment in a reasonable amount of time. Biodegradable plastics have been shown to be problematic because they can take a very long time to degrade and they can even break down into microplastics, so it’s important we all know the difference between the two.

Curbside composting is available in many cities in the US. Not all of us have the space for our own compost pile but if your interested in starting one at home and your blessed with the space, there’s a lot of information out there. I can recommend visiting https://www.almanac.com/how-compost-guide-composting-home because I love the farmers almanac!

These compostable bags will not compost if you throw them in the garbage. They’re not recyclable, so don’t put them in the recycling bin. These bags will fully degrade in a home compost pile or city compost. If you’re using the city compost just leave the compostable sticker on so anyone who might see it will know its a compostable bag and not regular plastic.

Do you want to start curbside composting with the city of Iowa City? It is $2/month added to your utility bill and you can request a bin here https://www.iowa-city.org/Forms/organics_cart_request

Happy composting!
